Bio

Peter was born in England, and grew up in New Zealand. He left NZ to travel the world. After several years in Europe, teaching sailing, he wound up in the West Indies and entered into the charter yacht business, captaining vessels from schooners to brigantines.

Peter then moved into the field of running large motor yachts. For the next 14 years, he captained the personal yacht of a prominent international figure, across the oceans of the world.
A chance trip to a friend’s family estate introduced Peter and his wife Laura to the charms of Virginia, and they promptly gave up their sea life, and purchased an historic house, on several hundred acres of land. They have spent the past fifteen years personally restoring this lovely old house (a job never done!), as well as raising beef cattle and sheep.
Peter retained his interest in his marine field, working as a technical consultant, and as a purchaser’s agent in the area of very large motor yachts.
He and his wife also purchased an old building in Scottsville that they renovated, and turned into a successful European style restaurant.
For relaxation, Peter rides his Belgian mare Molly, sails when he can, and enjoys exploring Virginia’s country backroads with his wife.

Peter believes “For most of my adult life, I have worked for people whose requirements were immediate, many times difficult to fulfill, and failure was never an option. My guests at sea ranged from presidents, princes and film stars, to schoolchums of the owner’s children. Our credo was that ‘nothing is too much trouble, and attention to detail is paramount’. I approach my real estate business the same way – it is the only way I know.”

Mount Airy Store was a hive of activity at the beginning of the 20th century- canal boats stopped here to discharge passengers, freight and mail, as did the trains (after the demise of the canal). Now, it is a sleepy little hamlet, just a few houses, the train, and as always, the mighty James River. The store is just a few steps to the Hardware River, and a few more to the James (literally). The bottom land and surrounding 1,000 acres is a state- protected wildlife management area. Scottsville, 5 miles upstream offers restaurants, brewery and most of the stores that you are likely to need. Charlottesville, is 20 minutes away. A gracious old town, with all of the youthful vitality of UVA behind it.
